Fishing Tips and Techniques
To be a successful freshwater fisher you need forward planning and an abundance of patience. But, you should also be prepared with some fishing tips and techniques. There are many things to consider before embarking on a fishing expedition, for example, choice of equipment, location and time of day are all important factors. But be assured that with the correct tackle, plenty of time and patience, you will be rewarded with a catch.
Your choice of rod and reel are the first items to consider particularly when it comes to freshwater fishing and you will be faced with many brands. But at the end of the day it comes down to your own personal preference.
When it comes to rod choice there are various parameters to consider:
The flex properties of the rod, usually related its height. Your choice of rod height largely depends on the size of fish you are planning to catch. For example, to catch fish of 2 - 10 Lbs you would be better with a short rod, however, for fish greater than this a tall rod would be a better choice.
The weight of the rod - Extra light, Light, Medium, medium fast, and fast.
Considering reel type is also very important and generally, for freshwater fishing, there are three types:
Baitcaster
Spinning
Spincaster
The spinning reel is most popular among anglers for its ease of use.
Now we come on to your selection of bait:
Of all the fishing tips and techniques you could put into practice, the choice of lure is one of the most important. Getting this wrong will impact on your catch success and is dependent on your targeted species. Fish, as humans, do not all enjoy the same food, for example, there are fish that prefer baits that mimic frogs, turtles or fish where as there are fish that have a penchant for worms, maggots and grubs. Bass, for example, seek out night crawlers, crawfish, minnows and frogs so by using those baits you are likely to attract bass. Essentially there are two main bait types, hard and soft:
Hard bait tends to be inedible and manufactured from plastic or metal and shaped to resemble the shape or movement of smaller fish.
Soft bait is usually edible, for example, worms, maggots, frogs, bugs and grubs.
Your choice of line is a governing factor too and again you are faced with a choice:
Mono-filament - The most popular choice of the angler and available in various strengths and colors.
Braided - The strongest of the lines and virtually unbreakable.
Fluorocarbon - Also very popular and chosen for its sensitivity and color choice availability.
Location, location, location:
Fish like to ambush their prey so choose an area of a lake, river or pond that has either man made or naturally occurring areas such as docks or vegetation where fish may be watching and waiting for their next meal which, hopefully, will be on the end of your line. Very often such areas are well known to freshwater anglers so try to discover virgin locations. Experienced fishermen and women get to know the signs and indications on the waters' surface that may give away the presence of fish.
The time of day:
There is a division between freshwater anglers as to what time of day is best to fish. Many partakers of the sport consider fishing at the crack of dawn and nightfall are the times when catches are most successful. This is largely true, however, our closest heavenly body, the moon, has some influence too. There are those amongst anglers that consult a lunar calendar because as the moon's position is different every night, so is the appetite of fish. An example of this is when there is a half moon; fish are less likely to feed than if there were a full moon.
A Final note:
As a fisher man or woman you need copious amounts of time and patience. Preparing yourself with the right fishing tips and techniques is the best way to learn what works and what doesnt. A patient angler is a successful angler. Although frustration levels can run high, the rewards are plentiful when you have a successful catch. You have to convince the fish that the tasty morsel on the end of your line is its next meal, eventually the fish will take the bait and you will have that feeling of elation that comes with landing a catch.
