Fishing for Smallmouth Bass
If you are a freshwater fisherman and you want to go after a fish that puts up a fight then you can’t go far wrong by fishing for smallmouth bass. Smallmouth bass have quite a reputation amongst freshwater fish, they can be great fun to catch. Personally, I have found them to live up to their reputation. By means of this article I hope to give you some pointers of how to successfully fish for smallmouth bass.
It is not a well known fact that smallmouth bass, as with trout, can be fished from flowing bodies of water such as that of streams and small rivers. In point of fact, if you are a trout fisherman, your favorite trout fishing locations can be the same locations to go fishing for smallmouth bass. I even use the same gear and I have to say I probably have more fun fishing for this species than any other.
In the following paragraphs I will outline some of the keys to success for fishing smallmouth bass. These I have learned over many years and I am happy to share them with you.
1. Choose A Small Diameter Line:
I mentioned before that I use my trout fishing gear to fish for small mouthed bass. My rod and reel are very light and I tend to use a four pound monofilament line. I have found that you will get more bites as the diameter of your line reduces. This is the case particularly when fishing for smallmouth bass in clear water.
2. Choose Gang Hooks:
Choosing to use gang hooks when fishing for smallmouth bass is a preferred method especially when using live bait such as worms. Gang hooks, as you may or may not be aware are just two hooks tied side by side so that a worm can be attached and stretched as it would naturally. Using this method and bait is an absolute must and will ensure that you have the best bite rate particularly in rivers and streams. Always make sure that you have plenty of gang hooks in your tackle-box.
3. Choosing a Good Time to Fish:
Ideally, when fishing for smallmouth bass, you should be at your location at the best time. The best time is when the fish are at their most active. This is not rocket science, however, it does pay to watch the weather and lunar cycles as these have a significant affect on the fishes feeding habits.
That's about it. Follow all or just one of these simple key details and you will have great success in fishing these smallmouth bass rascals. I have to say that I have great fun playing with this species above all others.
