Fishing Soft Plastic Worms

North American Fisherman Magazine

If you are freshwater fishing and at your wits end when each and every bait you try fails to bring you a catch then use the dependable soft plastic worm. There are any number of freshwater lures out there but no other bait has landed more fish than the good old soft plastic worm.

What is it about this little miracle that makes it so successful and a favorite lure amongst many anglers?

The ease at which the soft plastic worm is to fish with is probably it most obvious attribute even for beginners to the world of freshwater fishing. Another attribute of the worm is the way they perform in the water. Their action in the water is so convincing they are almost irresistible to many species of freshwater fish however you rig the worm on the hook.

Fishing Soft Plastic Worm Tips:

It is always a good idea to experiment with lures. Have a good selection of colors available in your tackle-box. As a rule of thumb if the water is clear with good lighting conditions then use a plastic worm that is lighter in color and, conversely, should the water be murky and dark use a darker lure.

Do not be tempted to by cheap lures as this can be false economy. Always buy good quality soft plastic worms, in the long run it will pay off and you will be rewarded with more fish. The way the worm moves in the water, it's smell and sound all play their part in tempting your targeted fish.

You need to be patient and when your patience has run out find some more because patience is key to freshwater fishing. Keep working the area and lure before considering changing lure or location. Your patience will be rewarded.

Be aware of the depth at which you are fishing you may have to weight the soft plastic worm although, I have to say that I feel weighting the worm can destroy some of the worm's action in the water.

My advice is that before you embark on your next fishing sortie stock up on some high quality soft plastic worms of varying sizes and colors this will enable you to get the best out of your trip.
