Trout Fishing Tips

North American Fisherman Magazine
Fishing for trout can be a very enjoyable fishing experience. This article will give you some trout fishing tips that will help you hopefully catch more trout. There are many different varieties of trout, but for the sake of this article, the species we'll be concerned with are Rainbow, Cutthroat, Bull, and Brown Trout. All of these species of trout are very similar in terms of how they behave, what waters they are found in and what you'll need to catch them.

Size definitely matters when it comes to fishing for trout. Tips regarding size are to generally go with smaller tackle. A light rod will give you the sensitivity needed to pull in a strike when you get one. A good 5 foot light rod and a light spinning reel spooled with lighter line ranging from 6-10lbs is a good start. You'll be surprised at the size of the trout you can catch on a setup like this.

If you are a wading angler in a stream, clothing plays a large role in helping you get strikes. If you are wearing brighter colors that stand out from the environment, trout can detect that. It is generally best that if you are going to wade in the stream while fishing for trout, try and blend into the environment as best as possible by wearing bland colors. You don't need any fancy camouflage, even something as simple as a brown t-shirt will work as well.

Pay attention to the smell you put off as well. Trout have keen senses of smell and if you are wearing any kind of scents, they will be put off by that and will stay clear of the area. It mostly comes down to the scent of your hands though and not what deodorant you happen to be wearing. The scent of your hands can rub off on the tackle you use and that is what the trout can pick up on. It will come off onto your lures and if your lure doesn't smell like prey to them, then they won't strike. One simple trout fishing tip is to rub your hands on grass, weeds or dirt to apply a natural smell to your hands. Fish will often smell the bait before biting and will not strike if it has an unnatural smell to it.

Trout are a very intelligent species of fish. One of the best trout fishing tips you could practice is the presentation of your bait. No matter what type of bait you use, you want to present it to the trout in an appealing and natural manner. Using natural swimming lures with lifelike action is one of the single best methods to getting more strikes when fishing for trout.

The next time you are out fishing for trout, apply these trout fishing tips and you will be guaranteed to get more strikes. After all, the more bites you get the better, right?
